Description

This magnetic coupler N scale from DIGIModelTrains improves the running performance and the look of your trains. Thanks to integrated N52 neodymium magnets, it offers a smooth, fast and firm connection between wagons. Designed and 3D-printed with high precision, it keeps the distance between buffers short and behaves reliably on straight track, gradients and curves alike.

Why choose this magnetic coupler N scale?

  • Instant connection: coupling by magnetic attraction, with no mechanical effort.
  • Realistic look: keeps a short, uniform gap between coaches and freight wagons.
  • Three diameters: choose smaller magnets for maximum discretion or larger magnets for more strength on long consists. Not sure which one suits your layout? Check our design and dimensions guide.

Choose your magnetic coupler N scale by magnet diameter

Magnetic coupler N scale Ø1 x 1.5 mm: maximum discretion

This version uses Ø1 x 1.5 mm magnets, the smallest of our three diameters. It is ideal for models where the available space is very limited, because its small size keeps the coupler almost invisible once installed. We recommend it for consists of up to 6 wagons, for wagons with low rolling resistance and for short or medium-length wagons. It is also a great choice for KATO Swiss rolling stock. Each pack includes 2 couplers.

Magnetic coupler N scale Ø1.5 x 1.5 mm: perfect balance

A versatile option that combines compact size with excellent holding strength, offering the perfect balance between discretion and coupling strength. We recommend it for consists of up to 16 wagons, for wagons with medium or high rolling resistance and for medium or long wagons.

Magnetic coupler N scale Ø2 x 1 mm: maximum strength

For applications that need more magnetic strength and a more powerful coupler. Its larger diameter gives better performance. No limit on the number of wagons has been found, and we recommend it for wagons with medium or high rolling resistance and for medium or long wagons.

Compatible with each other

We recommend using the same magnet diameter on both sides of the consist, but all three sizes are compatible with each other. The combination of Ø1 mm with Ø2 mm is not recommended because of the difference in size between the two magnets. The Ø1 mm with Ø1.5 mm and Ø1.5 mm with Ø2 mm combinations give better coupling. They do not match the coupling conditions of two magnets of the same diameter, so we do not recommend them for visual and mechanical reasons, but they let you combine different diameters when you need to.

Use them in any direction

Because of differences in weight, some locomotives and wagons perform better in one direction than the other. With DIGIModelTrains couplers this is not a problem: you can simply turn the wagon or locomotive around and it will work without any concerns.

Designed for the kinematics of each model

It is not simply a matter of placing a magnet in a coupler. We designed this magnetic coupler N scale around how the vehicle actually moves in operation. We studied how the coupler behaves when entering curves, especially its interaction with locomotive buffers. For this reason, the sides have chamfered areas that reduce potential interference and let the assembly rotate more freely. The length has also been adjusted for each model in our catalog, balancing good articulation, reliable coupling and the smallest possible size. Our goal: a coupler as small as possible, but designed to work correctly with each model.

Engineering and track testing

  • Maximum power: maximum-strength, precision N52 neodymium magnets.
  • 3D printing: manufactured using high-definition 3D printing.
  • Locomotive testing: tested with more than 300 locomotives and 800 wagons.
  • Minimum radius: tested on radii smaller than R1.
  • Maximum gradient: tested on slopes of 6.5%.
  • Compatibility: combine rolling stock from every continent without worry.

Frequently asked questions

How many wagons can I pull with this magnetic coupler N scale?

It depends on the diameter. The Ø1 x 1.5 mm version is recommended for up to 6 wagons with low rolling resistance. The Ø1.5 x 1.5 mm version is recommended for up to 16 wagons, and with the Ø2 x 1 mm version no limit has been found.

Can I combine different magnet diameters?

Yes, all three sizes are compatible. For the best visual and mechanical result, use the same diameter on both sides. Ø1 mm with Ø1.5 mm and Ø1.5 mm with Ø2 mm work better than Ø1 mm with Ø2 mm, which we do not recommend.

Does it work on tight curves and slopes?

Yes. We tested it on radii smaller than R1 and on gradients of 6.5%, using more than 300 locomotives and 800 wagons.

What if a locomotive or wagon works better in one direction?

Because of differences in weight, some models perform better in one direction than the other. Just turn the wagon or locomotive around and it will work.
